Imphal, April 06 2010:
BJP Manipur Pradesh president Shantikumar Sharma has raised the land dispute arising out of the Government's proposed fencing in Moreh-Tamu section of the indo-Myanmar boundary.
The issue was raised during the North East Conclave of the political organisation held at Hotel Rajmahal, Guwahati yesterday, said a source.
welcoming the border fencing initiative, the State unit president strongly opposed threat posed to the 2000 years old territory of Manipur as the fencing would mean parting large chunk of land to the neighbouring country.
The people of Manipur feel anguished over the issue of sacrificing territory of the State which lasted for over 2000 years, Shantikumar said while recounting that in 1834 vast tract of fertile land of Kabow valley with thick forest of valuable teak trees grow was given to Ava (now Myanmar) by the then British rulers to appease Myanmar.
He also pointed out that in 1952, the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru remained silent on the demarcation of the Indo-Myanmar (Burma) boundary and consequently the land was returned to India.
Now, the Government of India seems to have soft stand to appease Myanmar on the issue of border fencing so as to enable itself to bring an end to the problem of insurgency, he observed.
While conveying that Shantikumar's presentation was acknowledged by the conclave that resolved in handing over the issue to party's Lok Sabha MP Bijoya Chakraborty to table the same in the forthcoming Parliament session, the source also added that State secretary L Bashanta Sharma delivered a brief report in organisational set-up of the political party in Manipur.
Former secretary of BJP Manipur Pradesh A Sharda Devi is the other member of the State delegation in the conclave.
