UCM has demanded release of the three persons, two journalists and the social activist, who have been arrested by Imphal East District Police Commandos from their respective houses in Jiribam on March 22 .
In a statement, secretary of IPR, UCM Kh Nilamani Kha-Nganba said that continued detention of Moirangthem Romio (35), who is not only the vice president of All Jiribam Working Journalists' Union but also the correspondent of DDK Imphal and ISTV, secretary of the Union and correspondent of Poknapham daily Atom Lukhoi and president of All Jiribam United Clubs' Association M Maipaksana Mangang in the police custody is nothing but invitation to public protest.
It is also against the Constitution of India to arrest any person without arrest memo, Nilamani said, while decrying the indifferent attitude of the Government to the public demand for releasing the three arrested innocent persons.
Arrested innocent person on false charges and trampling upon the freedom of media may not be a new thing in Manipur, but the Government should take up necessary steps to ensure release, he added.
