Imphal, March 24 2010:
Authority of the state government has started installation of computerized traffic signal at some strategic junctions to assist the traffic police in regulating traffic in the congested Imphal city areas.
The installation of computerized traffic signals has been taken up with the funds from the Union Ministry of Urban Development.
The installation being taken up is part of the first phase of the scheme, a highly reliable official source said.
The state government had proposed installation of computerized traffic signal at 15 points in Imphal city.
But the Centre has given clearance for installation of computerised traffic signals at 10 points only.
The work will be taken up in two phases.
In the first phase, installation work will be done at the traffic island in front of the General Post Office, Nityaipat Chuthek, Keishampat, North AOC and in front of the LIC office.
In the second phase, computerized traffic signals will be installed at Singjamei, RIMS crossing and Palace gate.
Work for erecting the posts for the traffic signals has started at five places including the junction near the General Post Office.
With strong instructions of the higher-ups not to affect the road, drilling machines are going to be used to reduce damages on the road to the minimum, the source said.
The target for completion of the installation works is two months, and a new system which would operate the signal lights during load shedding is also being introduced.
As additional power source to supplement during power blackout, a mechanism to utilize solar energy has been included in the new system.
Though the scheme has been prepared by MAHUD, it is being implemented by the state PWD for the time being.
The source further said that the entire work is to be completed before the visit of the UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, who has been invited to inaugurate the three women's market complexes.
The market complexes are expected to be completed in June.
The second phase will be taken up after the utilization certificate for the funds spent in the first phase has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Urban Development.
