Imphal, January 05:
Observing that the foodgrains produced in the State is unable to feed 10 percent of the populace, Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat has urged the farmers to quit the traditional practice of farming now in practice but to take to modern and scientific methods of farming.
Addressing as chief guest in the inaugural function of the State Level Farmers training programme today at Irabot Bhavan, Parijat said that the increasing population on the one hand and the ever decreasing agricultural land on the other neseccitates scientific methods of farming to meet the growing demands and to bring ourselves on the path of development and progress.
He remarked that there has been a reorientation worldwide concerning agriculture practices like use of organic manures in place of chemical fertilizers as harmful effects to man and animals of chemical fertilizers have been confirmed beyond doubt.
The training programme organised by the Department of Agriculture under the sponsorship of Integrated Cereal Development Programme was participated by about 150 women farmers.
