Police commandos gunned down a suspected UG and recovered two AK 47 rifles at Seram Village Heibimakhong Polangsoi seven Kms west of Lamshang PS this morning.
According to a press statement issued by Imphal West SP S Ibocha, a team of the Imphal west commandos rushed to Seram village at 11 am after receiving specific information about the presence of some UGs in the area.
On reaching the area, the commandos immediately began surrounding the area from all directions.
However, the commandos were greet by a volley of bullet from some UGs from the western side of the village, said the statement.
The commandos immediately retaliated and a fierce encounter ensued with the UGs for about ten minutes after which the UGs fled the area.
The commandos who later combed that area found a bullet riddled body of an unidentified youth along with two AK 56 rifles and two magzine.
Well armed UGs numbering about seven however managed To escape after crossing a canal lying adjacent to a paddy field.
The body of the unidentified youth has been retrieved by Lamshang Police and deposited at RIMS.
The victim received multiple bullet wounds on the back, waist and left hand.
Contradicting the claims of the police, reports received by the press said that the deceased youth was shot dead by commandos after picking him up from the house of one Kakyenpaibam Bobo of Seram Village Heibimakhong Polangsoi.
The deceased youth has been identified as one Konthoujam Ibomcha alias Mamton (24) s/o Manihar Haorangsabal Block, said the report.
Report further said that deceased Ibomcha who is a relative of Bobo and had been staying at the latter's residence for the last six day.
Ibomcha was picked from Bobo's residence this morning at around 8 but no arms or ammunition were recovered from him, said the report.
The commando personnel thoroughly ransacked the house and also took away the WLL machine and receiver from the house, said the report adding that Bobo's elder brother Boy at and his wife Shanti were also picked up by the commando team.
In another incident, Bishnupur Police commandos arrested a UNLF cadre from Thanga Thongkhong this morning at around 6.30.The arrested youth has been identified as one Nameirakpam Manichandra Meitei (army No 1785) alias Thoukhanba (29) of Awang Sekmai Bazar Mamang Leikai.
He belonged to the 29th batch of the UNLF and is said to have under gone training at Churachandpur's Maril Task Force after joining the party through one Khongyamba on Feb 22 2004.
