Imphal, March 18 2010: The State Cabinet has approved to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the state government and government of India for commencement of the session of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Imphal.

Official sources said that the MoU was signed between the Union government represented by Director of NIT, Agartala, Dr PK Bose who has been appointed as Ex-officio Monitoring Director of NIT, Imphal by the government India and Government of Manipur represented by commissioner (education).

The director Dr PK Bose arrived here for signing the MoU today.

The MoU was again placed before the Cabinet meeting convened this late evening under the chair of the Chief Minister, O Ibobi who arrived here in Imphal from New Delhi today has also approved the same, a senior cabinet minister said.

Under the signed MoU, it includes setting up of a society to run the NIT and registered under the Cooperative Act.

The chairman of the society will be appointed by the government of India to run the institute to the level of a Dim University.

The institute will accommodate 160 students.

Fifty percent of the seat (80 seats) is reserved for Manipur while the rest will be filled by students from other states.

Government will select the government nominee through a competitive exam.

Sessions of three faculties of National Institute of Technology (NIT) will be started from July 10 of this year with five rooms to be hired from the Government Polytechnic, Takyelpat in Imphal west.

Five rooms at the library section of the polytechnic lying unoccupied have been provided for commencement of the session, another source said.

Recently government had, in a move to start the construction of structures decided to evict encroachers at National Institute of Technology (NIT) site at Lamphelpat.

Government has recently initiated steps for eviction of the settlers at the site as compensation had been given at the rate of Rs 43.27 per sq ft for residential area and Rs 10.72 per sq ft for agricultural land at Langol, Imphal.

In the Cabinet meeting Chief Minister also informed his Cabinet ministers about the fixation of state annual plant size at Rs 2600 crore, the source said.
