Imphal, September 27:
Highlighting State Government agenda of embracing tourism project that could be successfully implemented, impediments in tourism development and need for mass awareness marked the World Tourism Day observation organised by the State Directorate of tourism at Hotel Imphal today.
The observance on the theme Travel and Transport: From the Imaginary of Jules Verne to the Reality of the 21st Century was held with Tourism Commissioner C Kipgen (IAS) and director A Ibocha Singh (IAS) as the chief guest and functional president respectively.
In her address, C Kipgen cited lack of State Government attention towards tourism development and various restrictions as main factors crippling tourism industry inspite of rich natural tourist spots.
To minimise impediments affecting development in tourism sector infrastructures - especially surface communication - need to be enhanced and people adequately made aware of earning potential through tourism development, said the Commissioner.
Explaining on it Kipgen said tourist spots have to be made presentable to both domestic and international tourists, basic amenities well maintained and willingness of the local populace to warmly welcome and treat visitors.
It is unfortunate that Manipur despite being blessed with natural beauty is today making little progress towards tourism industry, she said while suggesting improvement of roadways and accommodation facilities as important areas to join the race of attracting tourists.
Referring to numerous tourism projects being initiated by respectively State Government, C Kipgen said the present Government is concentrating upon taking up one/two palatable schemes even though such project is time consuming.
Rather than advocate tourism schemes that would drain the State exchequer with little benefit it would be more appropriate in pursuing those few projects which have economic viability and boost job prospect, she mooted.
Resource persons/experts attending the programme spoke at length on the seminar theme.
