Imphal, December 06 2008:
A two day open discussion programme on the ethics and quality of text books of class X published by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) with reference to the National Curriculum Framework (NCF)-2005 began today at the conference hall of PGT College, DM College campus.
The inaugural function of the discussion programme jointly organised by AMSU and DESAM was attended by AMSU president Khamba Laishram and president in-charge of DESAM LC Santosh.
The discussion programme participated by many teachers and BOSEM members was moderated by Prof M Joykumar of the Department of History, Manipur University.
The programme deliberated on the syllabi and curricula being prescribed by the BOSEM.
Earlier giving key-note address of the inaugural function, DESAM secretary general Y Ratankumar noted that the NCF 2005 incorporated the perspective to bring about a reformation in the formal education system by spreading education beyond class rooms.
Another primary objective of the NCF-2005 is to do away with the practice of learning by heart.
The resultant demerits of over emphasis on securing more marks has been significantly put on focus in the National Curriculum Framework, Ratankumar observed.
Asserting that it is the collective responsibility of AMSU, DESAM, teachers and experts to find out how far the BOSEM followed the framework in the text books it published and how much local contents have been incorporated in these text books, he observed that Class IX text books published by BOSEM last year and again this year deviated considerably from the framework.
