In a clinically executed attack, KYKL cadres killed at least 12 personnel of 5/8 Gorkha Rifles and wounded five others at Ngariyan Chingkhong situated about 8 kms from Bishnupur police station today at about 6.55 pm.
While 9 of the security personnel died at the spot, two succumbed to their injuries at RIMS hospital while another passed away at the Bishnupur district hospital earlier.
One of the personnel who passed away at RIMS hospital is identified as Darma Bahadur (28). The other injured and admitted to RIMS are identified as Manoj Thapa (24), Min Bahadur (33), HB Thapa (33), Khuman Bahadur (28), Beijali (32), and Ajit Thapa (22).Out of this, one of them succumbed later, according to a late night report.
Some of the injured personnel are in critical conditions, said hospital sources.
There is however no official source to confirm the exact number of deaths and wounded.
The attack occurred while the security personnel were on patrol duty, said sources.
The militants who were well positioned opened a volley of fire at the patrol party with heavy guns and bombs.
Claiming responsibility for the lethal strike, a spokesman of the KYKL informed the press that the attack was carried out by the Second Special Operation Command of the outfit.
Straight after the incident, reinforcement was rushed to the site of the incident and a massive search operation was launched, said sources.
The operation was still underway at the time of going to press.
Sources said the exact figure may be released only after the operation launched in the aftermath of the attack is over.
As news of the attack spread, a number of reporters rushed to RIMS hospital.
However the reporters were stopped by GR personnel from entering the hospital premises.
