In a major breakthrough, the police in Guwahati on Thursday arrested one of the top leaders of the Manipur based People's United Liberation Front (PULF-Azad faction) along with two of his accomplices, according to Assam police.
It is not clear what rank and position the arrested PULF leader holds.
The police said that acting on a tip off, the police laid a trap at Gosala area of Guwahati and arrested Md.Rehan Choudhury @ Rehanuddin along with two of his aides when they arrived in the area.
Two live grenades were recovered from their possession, the police said without elaborating further, added the police.
PULF, the underground outfit based in Manipur, was said to have been asked by the ISI and the HuJI to penetrate into northeastern states.
Quoting intelligence agencies, sources here said the PULF's immediate plan is to bring Assam under its ambit.
Assam police said that the outfit has already established its bases in Assam's several minority dominated districts such as Barpeta, Nagaon, Lakhimpur and the Barak Valley in Assam.
