Imphal, February 25:
All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Singjamei Branch has called upon the Govt for taking up measures to resolve the ongoing agitation for introduction of Meetei Mayek in the schools from the current academic session at the earliest possible.
In a statement, the secretary general of the Branch Chongtham Amarjit Kha-ngamba said the Govt should initiate action to resolve the matter instead of launching a crackdown on the Mayek activists.
Such crackdowns would only complicate the matter, he pointed out.
While stating that the ongoing agitation being spearheaded by MEELAL for the welfare of the people, the students body, however, observed that burning of Bengali script text books might not be the right step.
Instead other form of agitation to press the demand should be adopted so that the academic atmosphere of the students is not disturbed.
Otherwise, the same people on whose behalf the cause is being taken up might react in negative.
By saying this, it does not meant that AMSU is meddling into the affairs of MEELAL, the statement clarified, and asserted that there is a difference between the agitation launched by AMSU and MEELAL in term of its impact on the academic atmosphere.
Meanwhile, many social organisations have pledged support to the ongoing agitation being launched by MEELAL for introduction of Meetei Mayek text books in the schools.
Throwing its weight behind MEELAL, Luwangshangbam Youth Club said that Meetei Mayek activists have resorted to burning of Bengali script text books after 26 long years of non-violent movement as the Government has not taken up any steps toward fulfilment of the long pending and justifiable demand.
In another statement, Laingamkhul United Development Club, Lamshang said the Government is doing a great injustice to the people by delaying introduction of Meetei Mayek.
The indifferent attitude of the Govt towards development of Meetei Mayek is directly giving support to continuation teaching Bengali script text books to the young students of Manipur.
