Imphal, February 25:
Citizen Concern for Dams and Development Manipur (CCDDM) has expressed its solidarity to the "Pada Avhi Yatra" which was launched by Bangladesh based ANGIKAR from Feb 23 to 26 in Sylhet dist of Bangladesh and various parts of the North East as mark of protest against the construction of Tipaimukh Dam.
Speaking to media persons at press club this afternoon, CCDM Co-chairperson Aram Panmei informed that Tipaimukh Dam when fully completed will inundate 303 Sq Kms of land in the catchment area thereby severely affecting the lives of thousand of villagers living in the area.
The dam will not only uproot the people but will also destroy the lives of thousands of animals and plants in the area which in turn will create some sort of imbalance in the ecology, added Panmei.
He also appealed to the authorities responsible for constructing the dam to stop the construction works if the proposed dam is to be built outside the framework laid down by the World Commission of Dams and against the interest of the people of Manipur.
CCDM's joint secy Jiten who also spoke at the press conference informed that site for Tipaimukh dam is very unsuitable as the area is highly prone to earthquakes besides the existence of a huge fault in the area.
