Taking serious note of the alarming increase of air pollution in and around Imphal city, a campaign to check the menace was initiated by City police since January 30 last during which many passenger jeeps which produced excessive fuel exhaust have been seized.
Following their failure to pay fines, four drivers of passenger jeeps have been sent to prison, informed a police source while adding that the drive would go on.
Till date, 32 passenger jeeps producing high quantity of smoke exhaust and with no proper vehicle documents have been seized.
Fines ranging from Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 have been imposed on the drivers of these vehicles by the Transport Magistrate at Lamphel.
Drivers who could not afford the fine have been sent to jail, informed a high ranking officer of City police.
So far, a sum of Rs 32,000 has been collected during the drive, the officer added.
On the other hand, it is reported that following the drive, number of passenger jeeps operating in Imphal city has dwindled drastically in the last few days.
