Imphal, March 06, 2010:
A day-long programme on 'fulfil labour law, right and duty' was held at Manipur Press Club today under the aegis of Manipur Senmit Ehou Lup.
Speaking at the occasion, Inspector (Rural Labour) of the Labour Department L Priyokumar Singh expressed resentment that the government is yet to work out a viable mechanism to address problems faced periodically by labourers in both the private and public sector.
Inaction of the Government is not only depriving the worker community their deserved rights but is also denying them wages commensurate with their effort.
He further expressed that inspite of the Government revising wages every five years the ground reality is that labourers in Manipur are paid the least compared to other States.
The Inspector, nevertheless pointed out that Labour Department has been extending solace to the labourers and their families under existing Gratuity Act when workers are either maimed or killed in mishaps on working days.
he further explained that gratuity is given to the labourer of both private and public sector who had been working for atleast 10 years.
