The Meetei Council Moreh (MCM) celebrated its 16th foundation anniversary at its office premises here today.
The anniversary programme was held with Additional SP Y Ashokumar Singh and MCM vice president N Pulindro as the chief guest and functional president respectively.
SDC (Moreh) Ph Ibohal Singh, OC (Moreh PS) O Doren Singh and acting president of Manipuri Muslim council Moreh Md Hussain graced the occasion as the guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering which was attended by a large number of people from various community, public leaders and representatives of NGOs, Y Ashokumar stressed on maintaining cordial relationships amongst various communities so as to facilitate expeditious development of the border town.
In his address, N Pulindro presented a detailed account of Moreh's recent history which included multi-ethnic composition of the border town prior to the bloody Naga-Kuki clash.
He affirmed that insistence of the NSCN (IM) that every household pay Rs 30 as tax to the rebel outfit led to the formation of MCM on this day in 1995 and since then every effort is being made to maintain public tranquillity in Moreh.
Moreover, it is due to MCM's endeavour that business transactions are being carried out throughout the week in the township unlike the past wherein business establishments remain shut on Sundays.
