Patriotism and love for one's motherland was the overriding essence on the first day of the XI Manipur University Inter College Literary Meet today.
Organised by the Organising Committee, the occasion was graced by the Chairman of Manipur Human Rights Commission, Chief Justice (Retd) WA Shishak with Dean of Students Welfare of MU, Prof W Nabakumar as the president.
The guests of honour included Prof N Joykumar, Dean of Social Sciences, MU, Dr Devraj, Dean of School, Humanities and HoD of Manipuri Department Prof Nabachandra.
The Convenor delivered the key note address and explained the core meaning of organising such a day at the university.
Altogether 48 participants took part in the patriotic poetry recitation competition today.
The second day will be marked by the rendering of patriotic songs.
In a statement, the Organising Committee of the Literary Meet explained that instilling a sense of patriotism and love for one's motherland is a part and parcel of any co-curricular activities in the life of a student.
It is in keeping this is mind that the Literary Meet has been organised by the Manipur University Students' Union without any break since 1994.However this year to give the Literary Meet a bigger canvass, the Meet is organised by the Councillors of MU, research scholars and students of MA Previous and Final year under the nomenclature Organising Committee, explained the statement.
Instilling a sense of patriotism and love for one's motherland in the young students is one of the primary objective of education, said the statement and added that the Literary Meet is about rendering patriotic songs and reciting patriotic poems by the students.
During the last 10 years a number of students who took active part in the Literary Meet have all gone on to demonstrate their patriotism in different capacities, said the statement and hoped that the trend will continue.
The Organising Committee also appealed to MU and the affiliated colleges to ensure that such a Meet is held as part of the co-curricular activities of the students so that patriotism takes root.
