Decrying the constant harassments given to students and shopkeepers of Jiribam by the 26 Assam Rifles based at Uchathon, women folk of the sub-division today took out a meira rally calling for a stop to such harassments under the immunity granted by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
Participated by about 300 women, the rally was jointly organised by the Jiri Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and Jiri Ima Meira Paibi Apunba Lup.
The rally started from the Irabot statue installed near the Jiri Town Hall at 7 pm and proceed through Dibong, Sorok Atingbi and later converged at the starting point.
The rally was peaceful and the women folk raised slogans asking the security personnel to stop unnecessary harassments of the innocent people, especially students.
Local people said that the 26 Assam Rifles have been regularly summoning students and shopkeepers to their camp at Uchathon and interrogating them.
