Villagers in their hundreds participated in the protest rally today at Uyumpok in Imphal east district decrying the killing of Lairenlakpam Amudon @ Ibomcha of Lamboikhul by gunmen suspected to be activists of an underground group.
The JAC formed in connection with the killing incident has also imposed a 24-hour statewide general strike which would commence from the midnight of April 27 till midnight of next day.
Over 1500 villagers took part in the rally organised protesting against the murder of the youth, brother in-law of the pradhan of the village, on the night of April 20 last.
It was started from the house of the deceased and concluded at the same place where the rally originated.
Various slogans like "Stop gun culture, we hate gun culture, don't victimize innocents, don't kill people without any reason, we condemned the killing
of Amudon, we condemned giving fault charge after killing, don't compromise life with money, don't punish people without trial etc," were displayed in the placards carried by the rallyists.
Convener of the JAC formed in connection with the killing of Amudon, W Ibomcha while speaking to reporters during the press conference said that the rally was organised in protest against failure on the part of the underground group responsible for the killing clarify on the motive behind the killing within the deadline set by the JAC and government inaction towards the demand for security protection to the villagers.
He also announced that the JAC will impose 24-hour Manipur bandh which would commence from midnight of April 27 till the midnight of next day.
With the end of the bandh, banned on the entry of outsiders in the villagers under the Uyumpok Gram Panchayat will be imposed from 6 pm to 6 am everyday.
The convener also announced that if any person of the villages under the Uyumpok GP be found involved in the murder case, he/she will be turned out from the area forever.
The JAC strongly condemned the attitudes of undergrounds doing whatever they want.
JAC is ready to fight any harassment meted out to the civil populace by the unwanted elements.
Twenty-eight year old Lairenlakpam Amudon alias Ibomcha, a resident of Lamboikhul who was pumped with bullets while protesting against an effort of three gunmen suspected to be militants tried to take away a three-year old girl when the pradhan (mother of the little girl) was not found in the home on that fateful day.
