Over 300 Imphal bound freight trucks were stranded near KMC dumping site on Dimapur side for the last four days since landslide on the night of August 14 last.
A huge mass of hill face was slide down at a place near the KMC dumping site, one of the landslide prone places on the Imphal-Dimapur section of the NH-39, located around three kilometer towards Dimapur from Kohima.
Hectic efforts are on to clear the mud by the BRTF workers assisted by the Nagaland PWD workers, a report reaching here said.
Mention may be made that with heaviest rainfall witnessed in Nagaland this yer, the BRO which is manning the NH-39, the lifeline of Nagaland capital Kohima and neighbouring Manipur is facing a Herculean task in dealing with the nature as the saturated mud prompted landslide and sinking on many stretches of the highway.
According to BRO official record, 604 mm rainfall was recorded last tear at Zubza till August whereas it has recorded upto 1293.75 mm during the same period this year.
The heavy rainfall has caused series of landslides and sinking along the NH-39 and so far 12 such sinking and landslides has occurred within the jurisdiction of the BRO.
They said to a news agency in Nagaland that the sinking have so far been noticed at Km 165.500, Km 175.000, Km 180.400, Km 180.600, Km 209.650, Km 211.700, Km 219.120, Km 221.350, Km 221.800, Km 222.300, Km 223.450 and Km 227.800.It attributed the sinking mainly due to passing of over loaded trucks on saturated hills along the NH-39 .
The overloaded trucks often breakdown mainly at Km 175.000 and Km 227.800 leading to traffic jam on the NH-39 .
The road was being made traffic worthy on war footing by the BRO authorities at damaged locations by putting their resources day and night despite various other artificial hindrances added to the traffic problem on the NH-39 .
Moreover, the KMC vehicles often dump garbage by parking on the carriage way of the National Highway, causing traffic blockage and hindrance to the road users.
In this regard, the BRO has requested the KMC to shift the boundary wall at least 3 meters away from the road surface and to park the vehicles inside the boundary wall for unloading of garbage so that any hindrance to traffic could be avoided.
