Guwahati, October 02 2009:
Finally, issues related to senior citizens and children have hit the Assam Police's priority list with the men-in-khaki for the first time deciding to raise special units to address the same.
As part of the plan, Assam Police would now have separate teams to deal with the rising instances of injustice and harassment caused to senior citizens, besides setting up a juvenile police unit in every district to impede crime against children.
Director General of Assam Police Sankar Baruah divulged this while talking to media persons on the sideline of the Assam Police Day function organised at the 4th APBn playground at Kahilipara today.
Baruah, while taking an exception against the spurt in crime against senior citizens and children, said, "We have come across may such cases where the elderly people are subjected to torture even by their own wards.
The police department would now initiate drive to ensure that the guilty are brought to book".
On issues related to children, the senior police official asserted that the juvenile police unit, which would work in tandem with social activists, would aim to arrest the rising trend of crime committed against the minors.
The DGP also revealed that the Village Defence Party and the Nagarik Santha would be further developed to strike a better balance between the police and the general public.
"Further, the senior citizens, under each police station, have been asked to constitute a committee to ensure effective policing in the respective areas," Baruah stated.
The Assam Police Wives' Association, meanwhile, is gearing up to organise a awareness programme on World Vision Day (October 8), the idea of which is to encourage eye donation.
