Library has a great role to play in the development of a state.
A reading society is a developed society.
A change will be witnessed when the citizens of the state have the habit of reading books in the libraries, said State Art and Culture Commissioner, P Bhorot while speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebration function of the State Central Library, Imphal today.
The golden jubilee celebration function was held at the State Central Library complex located at Keishampat here under the auspices of State Central Library, Imphal and Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.
State Art and Culture Commissioner P Bhorot, Director of Art and Culture Dr Kh Sorojini and noted litterateur B Jayentakumar graced the fifty years existence celebration function as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, P Bhorot further observed that Manipuris lack the habit of preserving old records.
This has disadvantaged the people in chronicling the true history when the time comes to do so.
He urged the people to begin maintaining records from now.
Noting that many valuable books were lost due to the burning down of the library few years back, the chief guest appealed all concerned not to target the library to achieve their goals in future.
Litterateur B Jayentakumar said everyone has to contribute for the preservation of the library while urging to avail the service provided by the library.
Ten selected writers and senior librarians were honoured with a cash incentive of Rs 1,000 and a certificate each during the function.
The honoured writers were Ningthoukhongjam Khelchandra, MK Binodini, Paokholun Haokip, RK Jhaljit, Elangbam Sonamani, L Somorendra, Hijam Guna, Khundrakpam Prakash, Md.Abdul Rahman, and Nongthongbam Kunjamohan.
The senior librarians who were honoured included Radhesyam Choudhury, Sapam Shivadas, Khaidem Ibomcha, Ch Rabacharan, Brahmacharimayum Premanand, Chingabam Radheshyam, P Achouba, and N Giribari.
A souvenir to mark the occasion was also released at the function.
