The day of birth of Mahatma Gandhi, which is observed annually in India as the National Cleanliness Day has been observed as the International Day of Non-Violence by the United Nations since 2007 .
The day was observed today with a symposium at the State Guest House at Sanjenthong under the aegis of organising committee of the International Day of Non-Violence.
RK Jhaljit, Padmashree awardee attended the function as the chief guest and president of Senior Citizens for Society, Manipur, N Binoy presided over the inaugural function.
RK Jhaljit, in his speech, expressed confidence that the uncertainty and chaotic situation that prevails in Manipur can be brought to an end if we all follow the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and abstain from acitivities which are least desired by the people.
The renowned historian and scholar was the moderator at the symposium, of which theme was "Non-Violence".
During the symposium, historian and former Minister Prof Gangumei Kamei talked on "Gandhian concept of peace and non-violence," Prof Ksh Bimola of Department of Political Science, MU talked on "Sarvodaya and Non-violence" and working president of the Manipur Peace Committee, Prof L Sadananda spoke on the topic "Imperative necessity of non-violence today.
Among others, noted human rights activist and Advocate Khaidem Mani also spoke on the occasion.
