In order to rehabilitate people with disabilities (PWDs) living in remote areas of Senapati district and to help them in contributing their mite to the society, Manipur North Economic Development Association (MANEDA) has started taking up necessary measures in this regard along with setting up a rehabilitation centre.
Established with funding from the Netherlandsbased NGO, Liliane Founds, the rehabilitation centre, which is first of its kind in the Senapati district was inaugurated during a simple today.
Deputy Commissioner of Senapati District Nidhi Kesarwani unveiled the inaugural stone of the rehabilitation centre and dedicated the same to the people of the district.
Construction of the rehabilitation centre began in June 2008 at Monday Market complex located at Senapati district headquarters.
The total estimated cost of the construction is said to be around Rs 40 lakhs.
The inaugural function of the rehabilitation commenced with the opening song presented by the choir group of Life Pages.
Delivering the key note address of the function, secretary of MANEDA T Peter Rangnamei explained that the centre has been set up with funding from Liliane Founds with the main objective of rehabilitating people living disabilities living in remote parts of the district and help them to integrate and contribute their mite in the society.
Apart from providing facilities for physiotherapy treatment to children with disabilities, the centre would also tend to take care of their education.
As for the elder persons with disabilities, in addition to treatment, vocational training would be imparted to them so that they could generate their own income, he said, while informing that since 2007, MANEDA has been providing treatment as well as education to 11 persons with disabilities.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Deputy Commissioner of Senapati Nidhi Kesarwani pointed out that the world has realised the potential and talents of the disabled persons.
So every efforts should also be made by all the people here in Manipur to help the disabled persons to integrate in the society and hone their talents.
At the occasion, Sanjenbam Satyakumar of Porompat, a physically challenged person who is already well-known for his painting skills with the help of his feet and another disabled person identified as Ch Dai of Senapati demonstrated their respective skills.
