Observance of the International Women's Day organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women began here at the office premises of the commission today.
The observance function under the theme of this year "Equal Rights, Equal Opportunity: Progress for All" announced by the United Nation was graced by former member of the commission Lhingjaneng Gangte as chief guest, director of state social welfare department G Satyabati as president and former dean of social science prof Ksh Bimola as guest of honour.
Delivering her speech as chief guest, Lhingjaneng Gangte observed that women of poor section of the society residing in the far flung hilly areas of the state are suffering a lot as they were ignorant of rights of the women.
They have no knowledge that women have equal rights with their counterpart.
She also opined that if befitting punishments were awarded to those people who ill-treated or torture women then crime against women will be sharply reduced.
Prof Ksh Bimola who graced as guest of honour of the observance function observed that from time immemorial, women are under the men.
In every religion books, women are termed as weaker section of the society.
While observing this, she called upon for a concerted effort to bring the status of the women in the society.
In her presidential speech, G Satyabati said, the state social welfare department is facing shortage of manpower for taking up steps prevent women from domestic violence.
In the function, prof Rajmohan of chemistry department of Manipur University and A Nautuneshwori of First Class Judicial Magistrate talked on the topics related with the issues ahead of the women.
