Following non-payment of due amounts indebted to Power Department, power supply to Manipur University has been disrupted since 3 pm of March 5. Manipur University which has been upgraded to a central university has eight power transformers.
Some staff of Power Department including officers came to Manipur University campus last afternoon and disconnected power supply to four transformers of 100 KVA.
Following disruption of power supply through the four transformers, electricity is now unavailable in the two administrative blocks, staff quarters, guest house, health centre, one ladies' hostel and five/six departments.
Moreover, 28 Assam Rifles post and IRB barrack located within the university campus have been plunged into darkness.
Attempts by this reporter to seek explanation for disruption of power supply to such an important establishment met with a very discouraging response.
Most of the officials tried to evade the question saying they were not authorised to give information to press.
On repeated insistence, one official disclosed that power supply through the four transformers was disrupted because of the failure of MU authority to pay security deposit amounting to more than Rs 12 lakhs.
All the four transformers through which power supply has been disrupted are of 100 KVA capacity.
Following the disconnection of power supply, various activities of the university has been severely affected.
Yet, some crucial works are being carried on using power generators.
Moreover, electrical section of the university were seen working to provide electricity through by-pass to some important blocks from the remaining functional transformers.
Shooting flayed: All India Lawyers Union, Manipur State Unit submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister O Ibobi demanding immediate CBI inquiry into the shooting incident that injured Advocate General N Koteshwar.
The memorandum also demanded for immediate seizing of the car in which N Koteshwar was travelling with some Ministers to preserve evidence.
Condemning the incident, All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) would abstain from all Court works on March 8.The association also demanded the State Government to probe the incident by a sitting Judge of Gauhati High Court or CBI.
