Army's love for Polo, specially considering the fact that Manipur is the origin of the world famous game, has always been in the forefront.
The 1st 57 Mtn Divn Polo Tournament 2010 organised by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association under the aegis of 57 Mtn Divn (Red Shield Divn) has kicked off at Mapal Kangjeibung here today.
Deputy General Officer Commanding, 57 Mtn Divn, Brig RS Grewal and president of Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, S Budhachandra, IAS were the chief guest and the president respectively at the inaugural ceremony.
The Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association presented a shawl and a Kangjei (Polo stick) to the chief guest, Brig RS Grewal.
The Association also honoured Mrs RS Grewal with a Kajenglei (a traditional tiara) put on her head.
Mrs Grewal formally opened the first Polo match by throwing the ball amidst the horses and their rider players.
Ten well known Polo teams of Manipur are taking part in the tournament.
Chingkheihunba Polo Club (A) defeated Manipur Police Sports Club (B) by 5-1 scores.
The tournament will continue till February 18. The champion of the tournament will be awarded Rs 10,000 and a trophy.
The runners up will be given Rs 7,000 and a trophy.
The best player of the tournament will be given a prize of Rs 5,000.The best Polo pony will also be given Rs 5,000. GOC , 57 Mtn Divn, Maj Gen DS Hooda, VSM ** (Bar) will be the chief guest at the concluding ceremony and distribute prizes to the winners.
PRO PIB (DW), Col Choudhury, Col Vikram Singh, president of Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, S Budhachandra, IAS and other office bearers will attend the concluding ceremony.
