Imphal, February 11, 2010:
Preparations are underway to inaugurate the three market complexes being constructed at Khwairamband Keithel in May this year.
The State Government is planning to complete construction work of the three market complexes by April and invite either Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh or UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to inaugurate the market complexes in May, conveyed a source.
Once the market complexes are inaugurated, street vendors occupying both sides of BT Road beneath the fly-over bridge would be accommodated in the temporary market sheds currently occupied by licensed vendors.
The State Govt is also planning to accommodate other street vendors occupying road-sides of Uripok, Nagamapal, Wahengbam Leikai and Khwairamband in the temporary market sheds.
On inauguration, licensed vendors occupying the temporary market sheds would be given their places in the three newly constructed market complexes.
Parking lots being provided along BT Road on the side of Polo-ground would be removed and open to traffic.
On the other hand, the State Govt has been asked to furnish its comments regarding the efforts to frame a national street vendor policy.
But the State Govt is unable to suggest any comment on account of the present condition of street vendors at Khwairamband Keithel, added the source.
