Golden jubilee function of the Maralui Karalimai Swijoikang (MKS) or Maram Students' Union which would be celebrated throughout the year has been kicked off today.
To celebrate the golden jubilee under the theme 'Imaging', the MKS is organising indigenous sports including the traditional naked wrestling of the Maram tribe, cultural events, seminars and symposiums.
The inaugural function held today at N Raisung ground, Maram Keithel was graced by MLA K Raina as chief guest.
The chief guest opened the function by unveiling the golden jubilee stone and hoisting the MKS flag.
In connection with the golden jubilee function, the 28th MKS Trophy was also opened today.
21 teams each of women and men are competing in the tournament.
Speaking at the occasion, K Raina noted that it is fortunate for the tribe to settle near NH 39.He observed Maram people have started joining politics and other activities along with establishment of schools and colleges.
However, the level of progress is still short of the stage dreamt by Maram ancestors.
Observing that Senapati district is the most peaceful district of Manipur, Raina exhorted youngsters and students of the district to show that they are well-disciplined people.
He further called upon the students and youngsters to avert killing of non-local labourers in the district as witnessed in the valley.
Former MKS members and elders of Maram tribe were also feted on the occasion.
Maram Union president R Peter, MKS former president V Hing and other prominent leaders of Maram tribe were also present at the opening function.
