Imphal, January 07 2010:
Inspite of the developmental works taken up after the upgradation of Manipur University into a Central University and its outward appearance of an impressive seat of learning today, evidences of lack of quality control in the construction work and failure of the University authorities to pay necessary attention could be seen
everywhere.
As one enters the main gate of the University, the sight that confronts the eyes may be impressive.
But the road leading to various Departments has been broken at many places due to want of quality control.
When The Sangai Express today visited the University campus to inspect some of the newly constructed buildings of the University, the ominous signs of quality control in the construction work could be seen everywhere.

Like the past incident in which a student was grievous injured when a school building constructed under the School Education Department of the State Government crumbled down due to lack of quality control, recurrence of similar fortunate incident in this highest seat of learning may not be ruled out.
Despite the existence of an engineering cell of the University, the veranda of the building housing Social Science Department which has been inaugurated not even for one month now has already having showing cracks.
Likewise, repairing work being done with great earnest after the ceiling of the second floor of the building housing Anthopology Department started falling down in pieces.
The said building had been inaugurated in December, 2008 only.
Talking to The Sangai Express, some of the workers who are engaged in the repairing work explained that properly washed sand, good quality cement and thorough cleaning of the surface is required for re-plastering of a ceiling.
Otherwise, there is the chance of caving in again. The sand used in the plaster of the ceiling earlier was not of good quality.
In fact, it was full of soil, the workers disclosed.
It may be recalled here there had also been the incident of the ceiling of the boys hostel of the University collapsing even before completion of the construction work some years back.
On the other hand, construction work on the imposing building of the Social Science Department of the University which is to come up on the right side of the road leading to the main gate has been stopped for around 2 years now.
It is said that construction work has been stopped after large cracks started appearing on the upper portion of the building.
In view of the affairs prevailing in the construction works of the University buildings, serious apprehension has been raised on efficiency of the engineers in the University in performing their duties.
