Imphal, January 07 2010:
Leprosy can be eradicated completely only when there is wide awareness about the disease among the womenfolk, State Leprosy Officer Dr S Sukumar has stated.
Participating in a day-long leprosy awareness meeting of women leaders organised as part of the 70th foundation day observance of All Manipur Nupi Marup at Irabot Bhavan here today, Dr Sukumar said that among all those who are playing major role in eradication of Leprosy, thorough awareness of the women on the disease is very essential.
He explained that an individual should be alerted when he or she see white or reddish parches on their bodies as these could be leprosy.
These patches would not have any hair, feel no sensation when touch or prick with some pointed objects like needle and there would not be any sweat in this area.
On detecting such symptoms on any part of their bodies or on their children, womenfolk should go to visit the nearest health centre to consult with the doctors, Dr Sukumar advised.
He also noted that total eradication of leprosy with just few staff existing under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme is impossible.
The foundation day function was presided over by president of All Manipur Nupi Marup Y Ibeni.
Patron of All Manipur Nupi Marup M Kadambini Devi was also present at the occasion as guest of honour.
At the occasion, elderly women were also honoured with gifts.
