Government has a plan to abolish the Ideal Girls College at Akampat and shifted the government Women Polytechnic at Takyelpat, said Education Minister, L Jayentakumar even as students of the college strongly opposed the move.
In an exclusive interview with Hueiyen Lanpao, the minister said that government is considering abolition of the Ideal Girl College, Akampat and shifting the Government Women Polytechnic at Takyelpat to the present building of the college.
The move is to be taken up as part of government rationalization policy of government colleges he said adding that presently there is 28 colleges run by the government in the state as a part of government policy to bring quality education in the state.
The Ideal College, Akampat is among the government collages where an enrolment rate of students is highly low.
As there will be no problem in abolishing such a college, government is considering shifting of the Government Women Polytechnic in the college, Jayentakumar observed.
The plan for shifting the polytechnic at Akampat is also related with the expansion of the polytechnic by adding for teaching faculties.
Not only this, the Physical Education College attached with DM College is also considering for amalgamating with another government college other than DM College so that the same can be expanded.
On the other hand, students of Ideal Girls College are threatening to launch stir if government move to abolish the college is reviewed.
They had taken a hard decision to challenge the move of the government.
In a briefing to reporters today, A Soni, general secretary, Student Union, they will not be able to agree with the government plan.
Directorate of Higher Education had, on June 29, issued an order regarding the closure of the college and amalgamate it with another government college, she added.
