Imphal, September 28 2010:
Referring to MPCC president Gaikhangam's statement that "some self-centres elements have been persistently scheming to upset the integrity and territorial integrity of Manipur and called upon all the people of Manipur to identify all those self-centred people and remain alert against their designs", the Naga Youth Front (NYF) has slammed the MPCC president for allegedly going against the basic tenets of Congress party.
Pointing out that Gaikhangam is from the Congress party whose philosophy of accommodation of the aspirations of tribes and protection of their rights has withstood the test of time and that he is a Rongmei Naga tribe from Khoupum valley, Tamenglong, the NYF alleged that Gaikhangam has negated both these identities.
He is seeking to perpetuate the alleged suppression of his peoples' rights and trampling upon their dignity as a bargain for a seat of power and influence, the NYF said in a press release.
On August 4, 1972, in the joint agreement signed between All India Congress Committee and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee on one side and the United Naga Integration Council on the other side, the Congress party stated that it does not oppose Naga integration movement nor considers the Naga integration movement as anti-party, anti-national, anti-state or unconstitutional, the NYF contended.
"While he may consolidate his position in the realm of temporal electoral politics, the history of the Nagas in Manipur will surely record yet again another treason committed against them by one of their own",
it added.
