Imphal, January 15 2010:
As in other parts of the country, Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight 2010 was opened today at Hotel Nirmala under the aegis of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Imphal Divisional Office.
As India is not endowed with rich reserves of petroleum and petroleum products, it is estimated that the country's reserves would run dry not very long from now.
Being a country with low rate of petroleum production, the country is depending on oil-rich Nations.
Of the total quantity of oil used in the country, 75 per cent is imported from other countries thereby incurring huge expenditure.
With the rate of petroleum consumption rising all over the world, it remains a big question on how long the country can import such huge quantities of oil.

For all these reasons, the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight is being observed to promote judicious use of the liquid gold.
The theme of the observance which will continue till January 31 is 'Save Oil, Save Money'.
Speaking at the opening function of the observance as chief guest Commissioner (Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution) S Budhachandra quoting experts said that the petroleum and petroleum produced in India would get exhausted after some years.
It takes millions of years for decaying vegetation and fossils to become petroleum.
It is estimated that all the petroleum reserves of the earth would run dry after 20 years, Budhachandra said.
There is not a single driver in Government departments who use oil judiciously.
On the other hand, the Transport Department has been issuing driving licences most generously.
With even young children driving vehicles, the sense of using oil judiciously is missing among the people he observed.
He suggested that the IOC launch a mass awareness campaign rather than organising programmes to save petrol from time to time.
