The observance of Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight, 2010 was set into motion today at Hotel Nirmala here under the aegis of Imphal Divisional Office of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Ltd.
The inaugural function of the observance programme was graced by Commissioner of Food and Public Distribution, S Budhachandra, IAS; retired Headmaster T Gulap Sharma and MLC of IOC, Manipur, Amarjyoti Bordoloi as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Amarjyoti Bordoloi stressed on the need to conserved oil.
He said, the resource will be exhausted if the same is used recklessly.
One must maintain care while using the oil.
Amarjyoti maintained that India could produce only 30-35 million metric tons annually against the overall requirement of 140-150 million metric tons.
As such, it has to import it from other countries to meet the need.
For this, India spends around Rs 196 crore in purchasing the requirement.
M Budhachandra said, the petroleum resource in India is said to be exhausted within seven years while that of the world's petroleum resource is said to be drained within twenty years from now.
He urged that the petroleum products should be used carefully if not millions of years will be needed to recover petroleum products.
He also urged the IOC authority to launch wide publicity campaign for the preservation of petroleum products.
Slogan writing competition for school students was also held on the occasion.
