Imphal, September 20, 2009:
Demanding distribution of the allotted quantity of PDS items, a protest demonstration was staged today at Soibung Keithel Langdum in Imphal East district.
Villagers of Langdum staged the protest demonstration demanding timely distribution of PDS items like rice, sugar and kerosene oil at the exact quantities to each household.
The villagers said that they would take their complaint to the Minister concerned if the local MLA and his nominees refuse to pay attention to their demand.

Langdum is within Keirao Assembly Constituency.
They would invoke RTI and launch agitation based on the reports collected with the help of RTI, the villagers said.
Secretary of the Women Welfare Association, Hidam Thamballei who was present at the sit-in-protest, said that they have not been getting allotted quantities of PDS items for a long time.
Though the people got some quantities of rice and kerosene, the villagers have not been getting sugar since a long time back, she said.
Even as each BPL card holder is entitled to 35 kgs of rice every month, the villagers of Langdum have been getting only 10 kgs.
In the same manner, AAY card holders are also given only 10 kgs of rice at the rate of Rs 10 per kg, Thamballei added.
For kerosene, each household is given a quarter of litre in one month and one litre in another month at the rate of Rs 14 per litre, she said.
On being enquired, the nominees reportedly said that they could not distribute the allotted quantity of PDS items due to deduction by UG groups, she conveyed while appealing to all UG groups not to deduct any amount/quantity from the PDS items, in case they are deducting any.
Another protester said that the villagers have been facing severe hardships in their effort to procure rice and kerosene.
Saying that one kilogram of rice costs Rs 20-25 while one litre of kerosene costs Rs 40, she said that the villagers whose main occupation is agriculture have been facing extreme hardships to keep their hearths burning and their homes lighted.
The problem is further compounded by the extremely irregular electricity supply and the scanty rainfall which severely affected paddy cultivation.
Highlighting all these woes, she appealed to all concerned to ensure regular distribution of PDS items at the allotted quantities.
