Along with the celebration of its golden jubilee, State Central Library observed World Book Day at its premises today.
Organising of a symposium on the topic, 'importance of books in the world today' was the main attraction of today's celebration.
Speaking at the function, DM College of Arts Reader Dr Moirangthem Priyobarta said that books make a person literate who understands the pros and cons of every happening.
Stating that books enlighten the minds of human beings, he went on saying that it can even lift a person up to the level of God.
He however said that people must avoid books which can spew poison and distrust among people.
Speaking on the context of the present world, Dr Priyobarta expressed concern that people everywhere are taking more interest in watching movies and other entertaining programmes in television rather than reading good books.
Taking part in the discourse, Manipur University Library and Information Science Lecturer Dr Ch Ibohal informed the gathering that World Book Day has been observing since 1999 in India.
Saying that 21st Century is also known as 'knowledge society' the lecturer said that the country which gathers more knowledge would take extra mileage in the pace of advancement.
Books are the treasure trove of knowledge, he said, adding that one must read more and more books to gather more and more knowledge.
