The District Health Mission Society (DHMS), Ukhrul, in collaboration with the Shija Eye Care Foundation Langol has successfully conducted a one day free cataract detection camp under National Programme for Control of Blindness, Smile Train Shija Cleft Project and UPA flagship programme of National Rural Health Mission yesterday at the PHC Somdal in Ukhrul district.
Eye specialists Dr L Sachindra and Dr Ramananda led the medical team from Shija Hospital while the team of DHMS Ukhrul was led by officer in-charge of PHC Somdal Dr R Ningsang and the district programme manager Irengbam Rajiv Singh.
Altogether about 270 patients from Somdal and its neighbouring villages like Kachai, Ngainga, Leisan, Torah, Phalee, Tuinem, Tolloi attended the camp where 38 of them were picked out for further free surgery of cataract at Shija Hospital Imphal in two phases.
For the two phases of cataract surgery that would be held on April 26 and 29 at Shija Hospital, free to and fro transportation will be arrange for the patients, for which they will be picked up at Somdal village.
During an interaction programme of the camp supervised by NRHM Ukhrul block finance manager S Songachan, BPM S Wontharla and BDM Bhagyachandra, Dr L Sachin said he was surprised to see the PHC of Somdal functioning well.
"If the other existing PHCs in our State function in full swing like the Somdal PHC problem will not occur in our health and care system," he said while assuring the people that he will do his best to upgrade the PHC to Community Health Centre.
Shija Hospital, an ISO 9001/2000 certified health centre which is excellent for treatment of eye related problems is now considered as a model eye care centre in the region equipped with wide range of advanced investigative, preventive and therapeutic facilities with highly qualified and well experienced medical and paramedical personnel, he said.
He also informed that similar programme will be held at PHC Phungyar in the month of May.
Villagers expressed the warmth presence of Ukhrul DC N Ashok Kumar (IAS), SDO Ukhrul Rajen Vishal (IAS) and CMO/Director of DHMS Dr Premchand Singh in the camp.
