This year�s Governor Award and Rajkumari Sanatombi Award was presented during a glittering function attended by Governor Dr SS Sidhu himself as chief guest at Asha-Jina complex, North AOC here today.
The Governor award, 2005 was presented to Geeta Maibam, a student of class XI in RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 6000 and a certificate.
The Rajkumar Sanatombi Awards which are given to outstanding persons in various fields were also presented at the occasion.
The recipients of the Best Student awards were Anjali Chongtham of Jawahar Nehru Navodaya, who scored the highest marks in the class X examination, 2005 conducted by CBSE and Luxmi Devi Thingbaijam of Tiny Tots Unique School, who topped in the HSLC examination, 2005 conducted by BSEM.
Thongam Uthan Singh of Little Angel�s English School, Ukhrul district was honoured with the Best Teacher Award.
The Best Sportsperson Awards were presented to Mountaineer Khumanthem Dasini Devi, Athlete Waikhom Lamnganbi Devi and Arm wrestler Sougrakpam Inao Devi.
Awardees in award categories are Thoudam Suresh Singh (for physically challenged person), Naorem Biren Singh (for Traffic Police) and Irom Ashalata Devi of Poknapham (for Journalism).
Over and above this, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Khumbong and Tiny Tots� Unique English School, Imphal were also presented with the Best School Award for the year 2005.Earlier speaking at the function, Governor Dr SS Sidhu observed that human resource development is of paramount importance for development of a society and among the human resources, education is the main element.
Expressing deep concern over the lack of discipline and moral among the students of present generation, the Governor said it is very unfortunate.
In the Gurukula system of the ancient time, the Gurus (teachers) and the Shishya (students) have mutual respect for each other.
But this aspect seem to be missing now, he noted.
Nonetheless, the Governor exhorted the teachers to strive for sensitising the young minds to these moral values and to the students to devote themselves to their studies so as to shoulder the responsibilities to be reposed on them by the society in due course.
The Governor also appreciated the felicitation of the meritorious students and teachers on the occasion of the Teachers� Day celebration which is being observed every year on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former India President Dr Sravapalli Radhakrishnan.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University and former chairman of MPSC Dr IS Khaidem and Director of College Development Council, Manipur University Dr N Mohendro Singh attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively.
In his presidential address, Dr IS Khaidem maintained that students should always work hard and have the competitive spirit to excel in their studies.
