A one-day workshop on Rights to Food in Manipur was held under the joint auspices of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and Citizens for Security of Essential Commodities at State Guest House here today.
MHRC chairperson of Justice WA Shishak presided over the workshop.
Giving the key note address at the occasion, Executive Director of Human Rights Alert Babloo Loitongbam said that Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948 and the Four Geneva Conventions in 1949 sow the seed for Rights to Food.
He defined the Right to food as the right to have regular, permanent and free access either directly or by means of financial purchases, to quantitatively and qualitatively adequate and sufficient foods corresponding to the cultural traditions of the people to which the consumers belongs.
He also noted that it is the obligation of the State Govt concerned to respect, protect and fullfil the right to food of the people.
In the technical session, Director of Economics and Statistics Dept Oinam Biren Singh and Statistic Officer of FCS W Deben Singh and Professor of Economics in MU Dr Amar Yumnam read out papers on different topics related to the theme of the workshop.
