New Delhi, June 25:
The CPI today urged the Centre to raise a new Manipur Regiment in the para-military forces and a fresh battalion of the Insurgency Resistance force to tackle militancy in the state.
A four-member delegation of the party headed by CPI general secretary AB Bardhan met Home Minister Shivraj V Patil and apprised him of the situation in the state where underground insurgent groups were preventing normal political activity.
Extortion and ransom demands were on the rise, it complained.
The party also demanded that the strength of the commandos should be increased.
It also pleaded for shifting of the Assam Rifles headquarters from Kangla in Manipur to Mahakoireng near Imphal fulfilling a long-standing demand.
