Imphal, March 31, 2010:
With an eye on improving the power situation in the State and help the people to overcome it, the State Government has joined hand with the Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) for taking up steps to install 5786 solar street lighting systems in Municipal, Nagar Panchayat and Gram Panchayat areas.
Steps have also been taken up for using solar street lighting system in 73 police stations and outposts.
Disclosing this to The Sangai Express, a highly placed source said that the Government has taken up these measures so as to help the people in overcoming the power situation at least to some extent.
Accordingly, MANIREDA has started installing the lighting systems.
In all, 2589 solar street lighting systems would be installed in 25 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayat of the valley districts.
Similarly, 3187 solar street lighting systems would be installed to cover 165 Gram Panchayats apart from 255 in Moreh and Jiribam.
Installation works in Kakching, Lilong, Mayang Imphal, Wabagai and Keirak have already been completed and the remaining designated areas are expected to be cover within the next 6 months.
Over and above this, MANIREDA has also taken up steps for installation of similar lighting systems in 73 police stations and outposts.
In each police station, six solar street lighting systems would be installed apart from 5 home lighting systems.
It may be noted here that along with inclusion of Imphal in the Solar City project of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, a project plan has already been prepared for using only solar lighting systems in Raj Bhavan.
