A huge function marking the occasion of the first Award of Excellence of the All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) in memory of late Major Shimreingam Shaiza was held today at Town Hall, Ukhrul with Naga leaders from frontal organisations including the United Naga Council (UNC).
UNC's backed Independent MLAs N Awangbow, Morung Makunga and Danny Shaiza were the special invitees of the occasion while another UNC backed MLA Dr Khasim Ruivah was the chief guest of the function.
The function was organised by ANSAM.

The most important part of the occasion was distribution of awards to the meritorious Naga students from Manipur who had come out with flying colours in the 2007 HSLC exam conducted by the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE).
The awards include cash with a certificate each alongwith a citation.
Of the numerous awardees of the Award of Excellence of the ANSAM, the first three have been one Themreirin Varah of Savio School, Ukhrul whose total mark aggregate was 420 out of 500 with 84% scoring letter mark in Language-1, Science and Social Science while the second one was K.Kapani of Okai Academy of Mao who scored 385 marks with 77% and scored letter marks in Science and Social Science and the third one has been one Daili Khuo of St.Joseph, Shajouba, Senapati who scored 374 marks with 74.8% and scored letter mark in Social Science.
Delivering his Presidential address, ANSAM chief Paul Langhu explained the reasons why the Naga students body has been doing this in the memory of a particular person.
He said that late Major Shaiza had sacrificed a lot for the cause of the Naga people saying that on several instances the late leader had shown concern for the Naga people.
Paul Langhu said that late Shaiza had stood thick and thin with the Naga people during the bombardment in Ukhrul in 1994 and the "merciless killings of the Nagas by the security forces".
Paul also said that Major Shimreingam Shaiza had taken voluntary retirement as an Indian Army officer in order to serve the Naga people in a better way.
Nagaland cabinet minister Thenucho had donated Rs 4 lakhs to the ANSAM during the Naga students general conference in 2005 for the use of the students welfare.
Chief Guest Dr Ruivah encouraged the students to strive harder saying that the world has become too competive.He said that students cannot afford to remain idle in this fast changing world.
ANSAM erstwhile leader Kho John while delivering a vote thanks has said that there are more than just awards.He asserted that the result from good disciplines, hard work and effort and performance are more precious than anything.
Former NPMHR leader Gentleson Vashum while moderating on the occasion narrated the circumstances where Major Shaiza was shot dead by the Manipur police in 1998.Naga leader Somipam Lungleng gave the welcome address.
