On receiving information of the vandalism carried out by the GNM students, a police team rushed to the Medical Directorate but they were unable to pacify the agitating students.
The situation was later put under control after arrival of top ranking police officials and MLA K Meghachandra.
As the students insisted on meeting the Medical Director, Th Suresh who was on leave on health ground, the police officials and the MLA informed the Director about the stand of the students.
Later at about 1.30 pm, the Director came to his office and a meeting was held with five student representatives of the School of GNM.
The agitating students dispersed from the site only after the Director assured to institute an inquiry into the issue within a week.
On the other hand, one GNM student L Nirupama, involved in today's agitation was treated at RIMS Casualty ward as she collapsed in the course of the agitation.
According to the GNM students, 125 students were admitted in the School in 2004-05.In total violation of the existing rule of charging Rs 6800 per student for the three year course, Principal S Ibemhal issued a notification on August 31, 2004 according to which all the students were asked to pay Rs 2300 each as admission every year.
On investigation, it was learnt that there was no rule in the School of GNM which is under the State Medical Directorate to collect extra money from the students in excess of the one time admission fee.
Taking strong exception to the silence of the Government over the issue, the students warned that they will re-launch more intense agitation in case their demands are not met and the Medical Director fails to keep his assurance.
