The Gandhi Shilp Bazar and Special Handloom Expo which will go on for 15 days kicked off here at Palace Compound, Imphal today.
The event is organised by the Manipur Handloom and Handicraft Development Corporation under the sponsorship of the Development Commissioner for Handicraft of the Union ministry of Textile.
PC Lawnkunga, state Chief Electoral Officer who graced the inaugural function as chief guest said that even though handloom and handcraft products of Manipur get appreciations from other places outside the state, the production of the same could not be improve till date.
It is laudable that government is trying to improve it.
DC, Imphal East, M Laxmikumar who also attended the function as guest of honour observed that handloom and handicraft products of the state has high demand outside the state but the present production capacity could not meet the demand till date.
With the effort to hike the production of the same, there is the need for improving the quality, he added.
A total of 150 stalls are taking part in the mela that kicked off today.
Many artisans from outside will also join in the latter part.
