The Manipuri Language Development Committee (MLDC) has observed the Manipuri Language Day today to commemorate the recognition and inclusion of Manipuri language in the Eighth Scheduled of the Constitution on this day in 1992 .
The observance programme was held in collaboration with Epa Thoukok at the office of Epa Thoukok located at Naoremthong Keithel.
The occasion was graced by Sahitya Akademi Award winner Khumanthem Prakash as the chief guest.
The president of the function was Sahitya Akademi Award winner and noted writer Nongthombam Kunjamohan while Prof Chongtham Manihar was the guest of honour.
Delivering his speech, Khumanthem Prakash said one of the advantages of the inclusion of Manipuri language in the Eighth Scheduled is writers of the state can vie for Nobel Prize in their own language.
Prakash urged the people to develop the language so as to promote the language at the International level.
He said the people lack perseverance in developing the Manipuri language.
He said the people have to promote the language amidst the strong wave of globalisation.
Prof Chingtham Manihar said the writers have greater roles to play for the development and promotion of the language.
He said the Manipuri language has been preserved for long.
But there are still many flaws to mend in the language.
He also said the non-uniformity of the spelling used in various newspapers and publications can lead to the decline of the language.
