Imphal, November 17 2008:
There are books of Meetei script in the bags of students, but there are no teachers to teach them the books, Meetei Erol Eyek Loinashillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) lamented.
Secretary of Education, MEELAL, RK Jiten Mangang today told reporters that as part of its campaigns to spread knowledge of Meetei script throughtout the state, the MEELAL organised Meetei Mayek writing competition for the students of government schools only at Langdum High School yesterday.
Most of students who participated in the competition were found being unable to write even their own names.
It showed that despite inclusion of Meetei script as compulsory in Class III and Class IV, the teachers have not taught the students, RK Jiten said.
He further informed that when a team of MEELAL had paid a visit to Oinam Girls' High School recently to inspect how Meetei script was being taught, it was found that there was no teacher of Meetei script in that schools.
He earnestly appealed to the State Education Minister to fill up the vacancies of Meetei script teachers in the schools so that the students of the government schools would not lag behind the students of private schools.
Assistant Head Master of Oinam Girls High School, O Tomba, who was also present at the press meet complained that there had been vacancies of teachers at the school since 2004 and the school authority had urged the government to fill in the vacancies again and again, but there has beenno response from the government so far.
Therefore, though there are books, there are no teachers to teach the students, the Assistant Head Master rued.
