Imphal, February 19 2011:
The defeat of Congress in its own bastion by Trinamool Congress in the just concluded Manipur's Konthoujam by-election that was held on February 14 has proved that the public have had enough of corruption and vice perpetuated by the ruling Congress led Secular Progressive Front government in Manipur, said KD Singh, All India Trade Congress (AITC) observer, North East in-charge, near here today on his one-day visit to Manipur.
Appreciating and encouraging the audacity of the people of Konthoujam who have dared to dream and bring in change in their locality, KD Singh said that the people have broken the jinx of the Congress, ruling as it has with the might of money and muscle.
"The people have now realized that only money and muscle powers will not work," he declared at a public meeting convened at Sarat's residence in 18-Konthoujam Assembly Constituency in Singjamei in Imphal.
He maintained that the courage of women should be harnessed in ushering in appropriate change in the State and as an antidote against the corrupt Congress government.
Referring to the support extended by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Manipur Peoples' Party (MPP), apparently leading to the defeat of the Congress in the by-election of February 14, KD Singh said that "a historical change has been set in motion in Manipur, and so it will be taken to the rest of the North East India" .
Iterating AITC's stance on the controversial AFSPA, he said that AICT has always decried the presence and existence of such law and it will take appropriate steps to bring peace in Manipur.
"Youth who have picked up guns along the way should not be randomly killed, they should be encouraged to come to the negotiation table and allowed to join mainstream society" .
Kim Gangte, president of Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress, hinted at the reemergence of the power of women in heralding change in the state.
"Konthoujam by-election has taught us that Congress rule has been stifling the people.
There is no freedom of expression.
Therefore women have their work pretty much cut out in bringing about the much needed change in the State," she said.
Before leaving the State, KD Singh met and interacted with leaders from BJP and MPP at BJP's office in Imphal.
