Imphal, November 30:
Expressing strong dissent over the deployment of military personnel to ensure construction of Mapithel dam, the Mapithel Dam Affected villages Organization (MDAVO) has called upon the authority to suspend all construction activities.
In a press release issued by the organisation, it alleged that military deployment for construction of the dam is an act of arbitration of all democratic principles and norms accepted at the national and international level.
It reiterated that the ongoing construction of Thoubal Multi Purpose Project and particularly Mapithel dam did not sought clearances from the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Manipur Pollution Control Board under the Environmental Protection Act, 1986 and its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notifications of 1994, 97, 2002 etc.
As such the dam has been a one sided approach bereft of all considerations like environmental, social and economic impacts.
