As part of the ongoing International Fortnight Observance Against Violence on Women and Girls, a mass public rally was taken out today to highlight the atrocities being committed against womenfolk and other related issues.
After the rally, a public meeting was held during which nine different resolutions were adopted to prevent perpetration of such crimes including domestic violence against womenfolk.
The nine resolutions are instituting a State Women Commission, setting up family Courts in all the districts, strengthening of Manipur Human Rights Commission, implementation of the Domestic Violence Bill, spreading legal awareness among the womenfolk, introducing creche-system in workplaces, especially market places, adequate provisions for safe drinking water and toilet facilities, speedy disposal of the cases filed by womenfolk in the Family Courts, to make public the report of the Review Committee on AFSPA and strict adherence by the underground organisations to the code of conduct framed by them while dealing with the people.
The rally organised under the joint auspices of Women Action for Development and Centre for Social Development was flagged off by Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof N Bijoy Singh from Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre.
Before the commencement of the rally, a two minute silence was observed in honour of all the victims of crime on women besides paying floral tributes and praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.
Starting off from the BOAT, the rallyists who carried placards and banners passed through New Checkon, Minuthong, Telipati and Nongmeibung before arriving at the starting point again, where a public meeting was held during which the nine resolutions were taken.
Members of 29 different women�s organisations from various districts took part in the rally and they shouted slogans denouncing crimes against women and atrocities committed by the security forces on womenfolk.
