Imphal, November 30:
Applauding steps taken up by certain student bodies and organisations towards reduction of extravagant spending and excessive electioneering, the Manipuri Students' Federation has propounded indirect system of elections for college and school student unions.
In a statement issued by MSF, it remarked that the ongoing campaign may bring down a bit of election expenses and tone down to some extent the extreme methods of electioneering employed in college and school elections.
However, the statement expressed its doubt that the campaign for free and fair election without incurring heavy expenses would be successful enough to curtail this dreaded menace.
Observing that extravagant spending during elections has been the main cause of student leaders becoming corrupt, it contended that indirect system would do away with all these unwanted and unhealthy practices of college and school elections.
Under the proposed system, the representatives of each class would constitute a students council which in turn would appoint its office bearers including the general secretary, finance secretary etc, it added.
The statement further appealed to school/ college authorities, social organisations and parents to ponder over the proposal and to introduce the system in the coming elections.
